Santosh Dash was fishing in a pond when the four-inch long fish he caught wriggled out of his hands and into his mouth. The fish became lodged in his throat leaving Santosh, 30, struggling for breath and unable to talk. He was rushed to hospital where medics battled unsuccessfully to remove the wriggling creature.

He was rushed to hospital where medics battled unsuccessfully to remove the fish from his throat. Tests revealed he suffered lacerations inside his throat from the fish’s fins. Senior consultant of ENT Department Dr Sanjeev Gupta could only see the tail of the fish. He said: ‘We took him to the emergency operating theatre where the patient was administered local anesthesia in the sitting position.
The patient was kept on a nasal tube feeding for 10 days till he completely recovered, but has since been discharged from hospital.
